Last Friday, Mrs. Kloeckner and I took 40 Bennington elementary students grades 3-6 to the Plum Creek Literacy Festival in Seward, Nebraska. The students took part in Literacy on the Lawn activities as well as heard author and illustrator Loren Long talk about his newest book Otis and the Kittens. We also took part in a Sing-a-long with Emily Arrow, who writes short songs about picture books.
Mrs. Kloeckner and I are hoping to make this a yearly visit to Seward! I also went to the adult conference and met quite a few other authors and illustrators from all around the United States. What an amazing opportunity we can share with our students!
We are off to a great start for the school year! I can't believe we are already into September! This year has already started to fly by. I am so excited for what the year will hold for all my students K-6!
New this year:
Reading Logs will be done online. See previous post about how to sign your student up!
If you ever have any questions please contact me.
This past week students have listened to a story about Lionel the lion who lost his roar but learned to draw. Ask you students about it and how even though they might think something is hard or even boring, it can turn out to be a lot of fun once they finally figure out how to do that activity!
Reader Zone - Reading logs
Each year I have a reading competition between grade levels through the library. This school year instead of paper reading logs, I’ve created a Bennington library account using the app Reader Zone.
Here’s what you as a parent need to do: (I created my account for my 2nd grader in less than 5 minutes.)
This is new so we may have a few kinks to work out as we get started! One I have found from my trial of it this summer is that you can only put in 1 weeks worth of previous minutes (if you forget, like I did a few times). So plan to record minutes from the week. Pick a day and if your kiddo is like mine, they will remind you to put them in. Please email me if you have any questions or trouble getting your student an account to log their minutes.
